The old adage of “Great Minds think alike” couldn’t be further from the truth. If you want better results and a team that is more engaged, having both men AND women on it is key. So, how do you make sure this happens? By Building Bridges of course! Last year, Barbara Annis’ speech focused on gender intelligence and how men & women are fundamentally different in how they think. This shouldn’t be thought of us as a challenge to overcome but rather an asset to utilize. To do this, we need to understand that each person brings something different to the table and allow them to use their strengths.
Make Sure EVERYONE Feels Engaged
Why do women leave a company? Most automatically think it’s because they want to raise children. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth. In Barbara Annis’ TEDx speech, she explained that only 11% of women left due to this while the rest quit because they didn’t feel valued. Leaders must realize that having an inclusive environment and appreciating differences will lead to strong teams and the best results possible.
Combination of Both IS Win-Win
So, why does this matter? Besides having a workforce that feels more valued, it also provides qualities most likely lacking in your team overall. A great example of the differences between genders is the pre-frontal cortex. Men think about action while women consider the long-term. When you take both into consideration, you’re left with a FULL plan leading to better results.
Freeing & Validating at The Same Time
Having the conversation that men & women are different isn’t a bad thing but rather freeing for men and validating for women. It makes everyone realize that having another perspective will help make sure the best decisions are made. So, the next time you’re in a meeting, be sure to build bridges by actively engaging everyone on your team.
