In its 3rd year, the TEDx South Lake Tahoe event was one for the ages. The 2018 event, like years prior, was star-studded and packed with inspirational speeches leaving everyone feeling positive and ready to live a more meaningful life. Here are 10 ideas to walk away with from the TEDx South Lake Tahoe 2018 event:
Are you putting off your dream? – Sam Horn
Like sands through an hourglass, so are the days of our lives. Don’t put off the things you’ve always wanted to do until the end of your life because you never know how much time you have left.
When was the last time we were right about everything? – Max Stossel
In this day and age, we’re focused on saying or standing in what we believe in that we don’t want to listen to the other side. Instead of standing on a soap box, we should stand down and hear what the other side wants. If we do, we’ll realize that both sides want the same thing in many ways.
Without art we would be the same as animals in the forest looking for food – Malcolm Tibbetts
Art makes us human and triggers an emotional response. It is through this medium that we can talk about tough subjects and remember painful chapters in our past so that we can move forward in humanity.
Laughter is the pit stop of life – Steve Rizzo
Humor can help change our mood from bad to good. In the toughest most stressful times, humor gives us the perseverance to get through it. So, use the “Humor-being” in you and see the humor that is all around you.
Is achievement killing us? – Neha Gupta
We applaud achievement over everything including health and relationships. Success isn’t just achieving things like money, power and education. We need to re-define what it means. A good starting point is to consider how we contribute to society, donate our lives to a life of service and lastly connect with ourselves in meditation.
Behind the mask we all have one thing in common… We all face fear – Sandra Joseph
In life, we have two options: show up or run away. When the opportunity presents itself, don’t let fear ruin it. Instead, use it as a catalyst to help push you forward into success.
The work will be here tomorrow – Adam Markel
Being driven is a good thing, but at the same time we need to understand our life isn’t just about work. It’s also about experiencing the good, the bad and the ugly. Embrace each moment to its fullest so that you can say, “I LOVE MY LIFE!”
We are unique & special in our own ways – Kylie Pilkinton
The sooner you realize that each moment and each tough situation is put there for a reason, you’ll live a happier more meaningful life. You are what your experiences teach you.
You are afraid because you are human provided you give it purpose – Emily Harrington
Finding the fringe of what makes you uncomfortable and activities that scare you are important. Without failure and pushing yourself to the limits, you cannot succeed.
If you text "I love skiing" a billion trillion times (which is approximately the number of stars in the Universe), the text would extend from here to the Orion nebula. – Marusa Bradac
Even in the vastness of space with so many stars and so many planets, there really isn’t a “Plan B” planet. The closest one that could sustain life would take us over 100,000 years to reach! So, it’s up to all of us to take care of our planet.
Because digital images can be manipulated so easily, we often find ourselves questioning what is real. – Ian Ruhter
The relative “ease” to fix a photo once it’s taken causes us to speed through the world at a blink of an eye. Why is this important? We can miss what is exactly happening at that moment. Dedication to creating an image via analog forces the photographer to get the right time, light and moment. Result? A more beautiful and focused photo that you would never get via digital.
The 3 D’s of Decision Making: Decide, Dissect, Deliver – JT Holmes
No matter what kind of life you live from B.A.S.E. Jumping to be an accountant, having a framework to make decisions is key to living life to the fullest. Decide if you want to do it. Dissect to find out what needs to be done to be successful. And lastly, Deliver!
Were you born worthy? – Nell Merlino
25 years after Take Your Daughter to Work Day started, there is now a negative cycle happening. 70% of girls between the ages of 13-18 feel they are not good enough. It’s up to us as a society to change that statistic.
Each speaker brought a different perspective and piece to this event, but the underlying theme resounded deeply in everyone. Be Positive. Be Brave. But most of all, Listen… so that we can build bridges in our community. Please don’t forget to thank our sponsors because if it wasn’t for them, this event would not have happened. Lastly, a BIG thank you for Palisade Investments for underwriting the entire event.
